LAKE INFORMATION

WATAUGA LAKE

Watauga Lake, located in northeastern Tennessee, was created by the impoundment of the Watauga and Elk Rivers with the completion of Watauga Dam by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in 1948. Originally delayed due to World War II priorities, the dam was built for flood control, hydropower generation, and navigation support. The lake spans approximately 16.3 miles with 104.9 miles of shoreline, over half of which lies within the Cherokee National Forest, preserving its natural beauty. At full pool, it is the highest-elevated TVA lake at 1,959 feet above sea level, covering 6,430 acres with depths reaching 265 feet at the dam. Watauga Lake is a popular recreational destination, offering boating, fishing, water-skiing, and camping, with multiple access points and no restrictions on boat speed or horsepower.
